Don't just export what Africa produces. Build the industries that transform it.

Kingsley Uwem, Founder & Group CEO  ·

Africa is not short of agricultural wealth. Nigeria alone is one of the world's leading producers of cocoa. The problem is not what we grow. It is what happens after we grow it.

For decades, the pattern has been the same. We plant, we harvest, and we export the raw commodity. The roasting, the grinding, the pressing, the branding and the margins happen somewhere else. Then the finished product, whether chocolate, cocoa powder or cosmetics made with cocoa butter, comes back to our shelves at many times the price we were paid for the beans.

Don't just export what Africa produces. Build the industries that transform what Africa produces.

The value is in the transformation

A tonne of raw cocoa beans and a tonne of cocoa butter are not the same economic event. Processing creates industrial jobs, technical skills, export revenue from finished goods, and, above all, ownership. When we process at home, the value we create stays where the crop was grown.

Changing the narrative

The world has long seen African agriculture as farming and nothing more. That narrative will not change through speeches. It will change when African-owned plants run to international standards, when African brands compete on global shelves, and when serious investors choose African agro-industry because the numbers and the governance make sense.

That is the work of this generation. I want UKG Agro Industries Ltd to be counted among the companies that moved Africa from simply growing crops to building industries around them.

What it takes

  • Discipline: running the business with the rigour of an industrialist, not the improvisation of a trader.
  • Standards: meeting global quality and safety requirements, without excuses.
  • Partnership: with investors who fund the vision, and farmers who grow what it runs on.
  • Patience: building for continental scale, not the next harvest cycle.

Cocoa is where we begin. It will not be where we end.
